Grand Castella Cake, Kuching, Sarawak

A new cake shop was recently opened in Kuching, a brand from Taiwan named Grand Castella Cake. They created a craze over their cake and every day since they open their door, customer line up to get it. Every batch of the cake the make, will be sold out in few minutes. Customer who didn’t get the first round are willing to wait for the next batch in a very long queue. We wonder what is so special about their cake and decided to check it out.

Grand Castella cake is so soft, fluffy and bouncy, quite different from the normal sponge cake. It taste good too, not too sweet but still very delicious to have with your favorite tea or coffee. The cake they make is actually Japanese sponge cake which is very popular in Japan and countries across Asia.

According to some articles, the Castella cake was brought by Portuguese merchants to Japan in the 16th century. The name Castella is derived from Portuguese Pão de Castela which mean “bread of Castile”. The only thing that make us wonder is, why didn’t the Japanese brands brought it here sooner?

The cake is made of simple ingredients such as sugar, flour, eggs, vegetable oil and milk. It doesn’t contain any preservative so it cannot be kept for too long. It is best eaten while they are hot but still very delicious even after that. We had it plain but we also had it with kaya and fruits jam, making it more delicious.

Currently, in its outlet in Kuching, they sell two of their six flavors, original and cheese. Hopefully they will be bringing all the other four flavors soon. Looking at the list they have at their counter, five flavors are on the list so, it might give us a hint that three more flavors apart from the original and cheese will be available soon. We’d love to try that green tea flavor.

In Sarawak, Grand Castella Cake also have their outlets in Sibu and Miri.

You should try this Castella cake as it might be different from other cakes that you had before. The original is priced at RM18 while the cheese flavor is priced at RM25.

Although the cake seems light, don’t be fool, it is actually really easy to make you feel full. One box of that is enough for the whole family.
