RA.FI Free WiFi For Rakyat In Kuching, Sarawak

Free WiFi for Rakyat (RA.FI) was launched by Kuching North Municipal Council (DBKU) yesterday, 1st August 2017 in Kuching. This free WiFi is an initiative done to provide WiFi coverage in the city. This is in line with the current wave being moved by Sarawak Chief Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg for Sarawak to embrace digital economy.

The MoU for the RA.FI project between the service provider, PPTelecom and DBKU was signed last year with its initial cost of RM10 million. This project was the first phase of DBKU Metropolitan Free Wifi project. It is one of the many initiatives for the State to make Sarawak Chief Minister’s vision of creating ‘Digital Sarawak’ a reality. With this free WiFi, Kuching is now the third city in Malaysia to provide free WiFi services to its residents and visitors, after Penang and Johor Bahru.

Currently, the coverage of this RA.FI covers Padang Merdeka and Kuching Waterfront areas. Some other areas have also been covered such as i-Com Square and Satok. It will be available in more areas and places in the next phase of the projects.

Those who want to use this free WiFi service have to register at its landing page. Once registered they can use it at any places that this WiFi is available. According to its website, it was mentioned that if you register now you will get 200MB free per login. We are not sure if there’s a quota for this but we will update it once we found out.

For now, they have some kind of promotion for every 50th successful registration and login, the winner will get a mystery gift. There’s also a monthly winner from August to October 2017.

During the MoU signing, PPTelecom managing director Datuk Abang Jemat Abang Bujang said that each Internet Access point for the first phase of the Free WiFi for Rakyat (Rafi) project will have a speed of at least 5Mbps-15Mbps.

We’ve registered and tested it with the result below.

We tested it three times to see the consistent speed and we get around 5 Mbps of download speed. As mentioned above, the service provider said the speed will be between 5 to 15 Mbps. For now, looks like it will be 5 Mbps at all the areas that this free WiFi is currently available. Hopefully, we will see a 15 Mbps speed and more areas will be added to have its coverage soon.
